What is Call Break?
Call Break is a four-player, individual trick-taking card game using a standard 52-card deck. Each player receives 13 cards, spades are permanently trump, and before each round every player announces (“calls”) how many tricks they expect to win.
The game goes by several names depending on the region: Call Break in Nepal and parts of India, Call Bridge in Bangladesh and Pakistan, Callbreak on most mobile app stores, and occasionally Lakdi or Racing in certain Indian circles. All refer to the same core game.

|---|---|---|
| Open first round | No — bid from round 1 | Yes — round 1 has no bidding |
| Minimum call | 1 | 2 |
| Double bonus | Rarely used | Calls of 6+ score double |
| Overtrick penalty | None | Win ≥ 2× call = −call |
| Game end | Fixed 5 rounds | First to 30 points |
This site uses the Call Bridge variant (double bonus, overtrick penalty, first to 30). A Call Break player will feel immediately at home — the core gameplay is identical. Read the full Call Break vs Call Bridge comparison for more detail.
Call Break vs Spades vs Contract Bridge
These are three distinct card games that are often confused because they all involve tricks and trump suits.
| Feature | Call Break | Spades | Contract Bridge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Players | 4 individual | 4 (2 partnerships) | 4 (2 partnerships) |
| Trump | Always spades | Always spades | Bid for trump suit |
| Bidding | Simple number | Nil + number | Complex auction system |
| Partner | No | Yes | Yes + dummy hand |
| Bags/Sandbag | No (overtrick penalty) | Yes | No |
| Complexity | Learn in 5 min | Learn in 10 min | Months to learn |
Call Break is the simplest of the three. If you enjoy Spades, you will love Call Break — same feel, faster pace, no partnership politics. Read our Call Bridge for Spades players guide for a rule-by-rule comparison.
Call Break strategy tips
Bid accurately
Your score depends on meeting your call, not winning the most tricks. Extra tricks are worth nothing, and winning double your call actively hurts you. Count your high cards and long spades before bidding.
Manage your trumps
Spades are the most valuable cards in the game. Do not waste them on tricks you do not need. Save them to break opponents' calls or to win critical tricks late in the round.
Watch the bids
The four bids always add up to more than 13. That means someone at the table is going to miss their call every round. Pay attention to who bid high and try to deny them tricks.

Is Call Break the same as Call Bridge?
Yes — Call Break and Call Bridge are the same trick-taking card game played under different names. "Call Break" is dominant in Nepal and parts of India, while "Call Bridge" is more common in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and the Middle East. The core rules are identical: 4 players, 13 cards each, spades always trump, individual scoring.
Can I play Call Break online for free?
Yes. At bridgeplay.online you can play Call Break (Call Bridge) free in your browser — no download, no sign-up. Play against AI opponents or invite friends for real-time multiplayer.
What are the basic rules of Call Break?
Each of the 4 players gets 13 cards. Spades are always trump. Before each round, every player bids (calls) the number of tricks they expect to win (minimum 2). You must follow suit if able; play a spade to trump if you cannot. Meet your call to score points; miss it and you lose points.
How many players do you need for Call Break?
Call Break is a 4-player card game with no partnerships — every player competes individually. On bridgeplay.online, you can fill empty seats with AI opponents if you have fewer than 4 human players.
Is Call Break related to Spades?
They are cousins in the trick-taking card game family. Both use spades as permanent trump and individual bidding. Key differences: Call Break has no nil bids, no bags/sandbag penalty, no partnerships, and uses a double bonus for high bids. A Spades player will feel at home within one round.
What is the difference between Call Break and Contract Bridge?
Despite the similar names, they are completely different games. Contract Bridge is a partnership game with a complex auction, dummy hand, and governing body (World Bridge Federation). Call Break is an individual game with simple bidding, no partner, and rules you can learn in five minutes.
