Spades are always trump — every round, every trick. This never changes.

02 Round 1 — The Open Round

Round 1 is unique: there is no bidding. Every player simply plays their cards and every trick you win scores +1 point. It's a warm-up round designed to let everyone assess their hand before the real strategy begins in Round 2.

How a trick works

  1. 1The first player leads any card face-up.
  2. 2All other players must follow the led suit if they have one.
  3. 3If you have no cards in the led suit, you may play any card — including a spade (trump).
  4. 4The highest card of the led suit wins the trick — unless a spade was played, in which case the highest spade wins.
  5. 5The trick winner leads the next card.

03 Rounds 2–5 — Bidding Phase

Before play begins in Rounds 2 through 5, each player declares their "call" — the number of tricks they intend to win. This is where the game's strategy comes alive.

After all bids are declared, play proceeds identically to Round 1. Tricks are played until all 13 are taken, then scores are calculated.

04 Scoring

Winning more tricks than you called earns you nothing extra. Precision is everything.

Met your call+tricks calledCalled 4, won 4 → +4
Won more than your call+tricks called (no bonus)Called 4, won 6 → +4
Called 6+ and met exactly+tricks × 2Called 7, won 7 → +14 ★
Missed your call−tricks calledCalled 5, won 3 → −5
Round 1 (open round)+tricks wonNo bid, won 4 → +4

★ The double-bonus trap: Calling 6 or more and hitting exactly doubles your score — but missing by even one trick loses you the full bid. For example: call 7, win 6 → −7 points. Only bid high when you're confident.

05 Winning the Game

The first player to reach 30 points wins. If two players reach 30 in the same round, the higher score wins. If tied, play one additional round to determine the winner.

Some groups play to 21 or 40 — agree on the target before the first deal.

06 5 Strategy Tips for Beginners

1
Count your spades first
High spades (Ace, King, Queen) are almost guaranteed tricks. Count them before bidding — each one is likely worth a trick.
2
Bid conservatively in Round 2
You're still learning everyone's hand. A safe call of 3 beats a risky call of 7 that misses.
3
Don't overbid for the double bonus
The 6+ double bonus is tempting, but missing costs you double in the other direction. Only go high when your hand is very strong.
4
Control the lead
Winning a trick means you lead the next card. Use this to exhaust opponents' suits or to set up your high cards.
5
Track which suits are exhausted
When a player can't follow a suit, you know their void. Use this information to predict when spades will be played.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many players do you need for Call Bridge?

Call Bridge is designed for exactly 4 players with a standard 52-card deck, giving each player 13 cards. There is no partnership play — all 4 players compete individually.

What is the minimum bid in Call Bridge?

The minimum call (bid) is 2 tricks in Rounds 2 through 5. You cannot bid 0 or 1. There is no minimum in Round 1 because it is an open round with no bidding.

What happens if you win more tricks than you called?

Nothing extra — you only score the number of tricks you called, not the number you won. Winning 7 tricks when you called 4 still only gives you +4. Precision matters more than aggression.

Can you play a spade at any time?

You can only play a spade (trump) when you cannot follow the led suit. However, once any player has played a spade in any trick, "trump is broken" and you may lead with spades from then on.

How do you win Call Bridge?

The first player to reach 30 points wins the game. If two players reach 30 in the same round, the higher score wins. If tied, play one more round.
